A Ph.D. is more than just prestige – it can take your career to the next level. Higher salary prospects, exciting research, exclusive career opportunities: a doctorate can open doors for you that remain closed to others. But is it really worth the effort? What advantages does a doctorate offer – and what challenges should you be aware of?

In this article, we will show you what career leaps are possible with a doctorate, in which sectors it is worth it most and how your salary can develop. You’ll also find out how to overcome potential hurdles and whether a part-time doctorate is the right choice for you.

What Does It Mean To Do a Doctorate?

A doctorate is an intensive research project that concludes with a dissertation and an oral examination, the disputation. It usually takes three to five years and requires not only professional excellence, but also self-motivation and perseverance. During this time, you will immerse yourself in a specific research topic, develop innovative solutions and make a real contribution to science and practice. As soon as you have a Master’s degree, you can do a doctorate. You are also admitted to doctoral studies with comparable degrees, e.g. a Diplom or Magister. The decisive factor is that you can prove that you have a total of 300 ECTS.

However, a doctorate is not just for prospective academics who want to stay at university. It can also open doors to particularly demanding and highly paid positions in the private sector. However, anyone who decides to take this step should carefully consider whether the effort is worth it in the long term.

Why is a Doctorate Worthwhile?

A doctorate is not just an academic title – it can be decisive for your career. Many companies are specifically looking for highly qualified specialists with analytical skills, scientific thinking and strong problem-solving skills. The ability to successfully complete a complex research project over a period of years demonstrates resilience, stamina and a structured approach to work – qualities that are in demand in almost all industries.

Financial Advantages of a Doctorate

The financial advantage of a doctorate can be significant. According to a survey by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis, 2022) based on a sample of 75,000 employees from various sectors, specialists with a doctorate earn on average 30% more than their colleagues with a master’s degree.

Figure 1 shows this difference between the gross monthly salaries of Master’s graduates and Doctoral graduates:

  • Master’s graduates earn an average of €6,188 gross per month.
  • Doctoral graduates earn a significantly higher average salary of €8,687 gross per month, which corresponds to an income advantage of around 30%.

This difference in salary becomes even clearer when calculated on an annual basis. Figure 2 shows the difference between the average gross annual salary with a Master’s degree versus that with a Doctorate:

According to the Destatis study (2022), Doctoral graduates earn an average of €104,244 gross per year, while Master’s graduates earn €74,156 gross per year. This corresponds to an annual salary advantage of €30,000 for doctoral graduates.

This truly enormous difference in salary is mainly due to the new career paths that a doctorate opens up.

Career Opportunities with a Doctorate

As just mentioned, a doctorate opens up new career paths that go beyond the traditional Master’s degree. In many professions, specialists with a doctorate are destined for higher positions or can start directly in roles of responsibility.

This is where a doctorate is particularly valuable:

  • Law – specialist knowledge for top law firms: Master’s graduates start out as legal research assistants. With a doctorate in law, you can specialize and thus advise large companies, conduct negotiations and work in leading law firms or as in-house counsel.
  • Consulting – direct entry at a higher level: In consulting, you usually start as an analyst or junior consultant with a Master’s degree. With a PhD , you can move into management roles more quickly, for example in life sciences, IT strategy or financial consulting. Your specialist knowledge is particularly in demand for complex market and business analyses.
  • Engineering Sciences – leadership roles in innovation: Master’s graduates usually work as project engineers. With a doctorate in engineering, you will drive innovation, help shape future technologies and cooperate with universities and political institutions.

In addition to science, a doctorate can also be the key to responsible and lucrative positions in business and industry. But how can you reconcile a doctorate with your job?

Doing a Doctorate While Working – is that possible?

Yes, it is possible! Many professionals choose to obtain their doctorate alongside their job. This has the advantage that you can continue to work and earn an income while expanding your academic qualifications. Companies often support their employees by integrating doctoral projects into the company strategy or entering into research partnerships with universities.

However, a part-time doctorate requires excellent time management and the balance between job, doctorate and free time is not always easy. But it also offers you the attractive option of continuing to receive your regular salary and putting your research project directly into practice.
