8 tips on how to overcome writer’s block

How do I start my term paper, Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis?

You’ve found your topic for your term paper, bachelor’s or master’s thesis, worked out your outline, formulated the research question and researched the literature – good prerequisites for getting started with your writing. Nevertheless, you don’t manage to get started and fill the empty Word file with letters, words and sentences. You are paralyzed, afraid of the blank page and ask yourself: Do I have writer’s block? How can I solve this?

To reassure you: writer’s block or writer’s inhibition is part of every writing process, because you can’t keep your energy and motivation at a high level all the time. There will always be phases during the creation of your academic paper when your motivation is lower and you find it difficult to organize your thoughts and put them down on paper.

Burn for your topic

The important thing is that you are passionate about your topic and that you really want to write about it. Also be aware of your why. Why do you want to work on this topic? What exactly are you interested in?

If you still can’t get started or your writing process stalls, we have 7 tips for you on how to get back into the flow of writing.

Tip 1: Strictly separate writing and revising

Writing is a creative process in which you are allowed to make mistakes and leave gaps. Your sentences don’t have to be perfect right away, on the contrary. If you’re constantly tweaking and optimizing every sentence, you’ll take yourself out of the writing flow. First create a first draft before you revise your text in a later step.

Tip 2: Writing time is writing time

When you are writing your academic paper, you should really be writing and not doing anything else. This means that you should turn off any distractions, such as distracting phone calls, doorbells, social media notifications or people in the room where you are writing. You should really be able to write undisturbed without being distracted.

Tip 3: Set a time limit and reward

To avoid falling into perfectionism, it makes sense to set yourself a realistic time limit to write a certain section or chapter in a defined time. Reward yourself when you’ve done it. You decide exactly what the reward looks like. This significantly increases motivation to write and takes away the fear of a blank page.

Tip 4: Take regular breaks

In order to make progress with writing, it is important to take regular breaks so that you can get back on track. Whether it’s a walk, a short phone call, a power nap or a round of yoga or meditation, the important thing is that you relax and recharge your batteries so that you can continue with new thoughts. Sometimes it can also help to leave the text for a day or two and only then continue writing.

Tip 5: Talk about writing

It is extremely helpful if you discuss your topic with fellow students or other people you know and get further inspiration. If you share your thoughts with someone who is not necessarily an expert in your field of research, you will quickly realize whether they understand you or not. This in turn will help you with your writing process.

Tip 6: Change the medium: paper instead of screen

If you can’t think of anything else, leave the screen and switch to paper to continue writing. Writing on the computer invites you to correct and perfect everything immediately, but this should be avoided at first. It’s best to just start writing, then you’ll realize that it’s much more difficult to enforce your sometimes somewhat annoying perfectionism on paper.

Tip 7: Change writing location

Most people write at their desks, but sometimes they can’t think of anything to say. Simply change your writing location, for example by writing at a friend’s house or sitting in the garden, a café or the library. Perhaps the best thoughts come to you in the sun with a view of the sea.

Tip 8: Let ChatGPT inspire you

Another way to overcome your writer’s block and generate new ideas is to use AI text generators such as ChatGPT. These tools can help you to develop fresh perspectives and approaches for your work. For example, you can enter a short summary or a question about your topic and see what ideas ChatGPT generates. This can give you new food for thought and inspire you to get back into the “writing flow”.

Remember that while ChatGPT can be a useful resource, it should always be scrutinized. Use the generated texts as a starting point and develop your own thoughts further.
